We all remember Troy Ave’s famous rant from last year, but perhaps that rant reveals a bigger problem with New York artists. Troy Ave, one of the main faces of New York Hip Hop called Kanye, Kendrick, and Flatbush Zombies weirdos.
Although Troy Ave may seem alone in his sentiments, he isn’t. When ASAP Rocky came out with his critically acclaimed Live. Love. ASAP, NY artists called Rocky and the ASAP Mob weirdos, gay, faggots, etc. They said their music wasn’t real Hip Hop. The mixtape and Rocky weren’t New York enough.
ASAP Rocky makes great music that is supposedly not “New York” enough. On the other hand, many New York artists make great music for New York that isn’t liked anywhere else. Perhaps when New York artists learn to let go of the sound of the 90’s and realize that they don’t have to bring back the east coast, we’ll finally see some progress.
In the meantime, we’ll have to deal with a few more New York artists who take the music they make and themselves too seriously.
