A dilemma in the hip hop game that challenges many social norms and gender biases, the double standard for female mc’s. In a game where over the top character traits are seen as the norm. How is a individual suppose to stand out in a genre full of individuals, especially a female in a male dominated genre at that. For men AND women, the genre of hip hop tends to lean on overexcessiveness, whether its overexcessiveness in subject matter, themes, tone, violence, and nowadays. Sexuality.
Well hey, how come Drake can shut down the gram, and have the whole internet sing praises.
While a Nicki Minaj twerk flick brings out the sticks and forks.
Well you already know the answer to that question. In this male centric industry and society, women are not allowed to own their sexuality in the same light as men. The catch 22 is, in this culture it is also extremely hard for a female MC to stand out from the pack unless she does own her sexuality. Whether its a Lil Kim, Nicki, or a Iggy .
The greater overarching theme here however is the question of choice. Whether a FemC decides to use her assets to gain more appeal and success in the industry or not. Is HER choice to decide, and hers only. As a woman and as a human being one should have the right to do and use whatever they want in their form of self expression.
Especially in a field where men do the EXACT SAME THING.
Women should be allowed the same flexibility in their sexuality and identity as men do. Ferrari 50 could go shirtless at a concert, have a the girls screaming(and some men,but we arent judging here 😉 ), then wake up the next morning put on a business suit and go handle business at a meeting at #EFFENVodka. 2pac could be a thug on one song then a black panther on another. Drake can rap about being a Canadian mob boss on one record, then be a heartbroken loverboy on the next. Women in this industry should be allowed the same freedom. The freedom of being a human. A individual with many sides to the their own sense of self.
Be the bad bitch AND the lyrical monster. Be a woman who completely owns her sexuality, yet still has a high level of intellect and a firm grasp of the world around her. It should not be one or the other, humans are complex and have many facets of our own personal identity. Surely we would expect the same from our artists?
Just because a woman decides to dress more revealing and embrace her sexuality does not make her a slut or a attention whore. For shoving down this ideal image of a conservative dusty backpack underground lauryn hill image on a female MC is just as offensive as expecting her to be ’96 lil kim 24/7. Caging a free bird is no different than shooting down a wild one out the sky. As a culture we need to start allowing our female MC’s the same rights as our male one’s. The right to complexity, the right to have contradictory messages and images, the right to NOT be perfect, the right to being human.
No one could articulate this point better than NY based rapper Nitty Scott, we will let her take the wheel from here.
And here a some pictures for all you idiots who didnt read a single thing we just wrote and just came here for some flicks. We got ya covered too 😉
